Each December, the Akron High School Tiger Marching Band transforms into the festive “Santa’s Helpers Band,” spreading holiday cheer across Western New York.
On December 15, 2023, students donned Santa hats and elf shoes, visiting community landmarks like the NFTA Bus Station in Buffalo, FeedMore WNY in Amherst, Buffalo Niagara International Airport, as well as cherished senior communities and local businesses.
Stops included Amberleigh and Solstice in Williamsville, Dave Smith Ford, and the Eastern Hills Mall, creating lasting memories for both audiences and the band’s young musicians.
Led by Director Brendon Bardo, the event encourages students from all grades to connect, celebrate, and share their musical gifts while strengthening local bonds.

The African American Cultural Center in Buffalo has completed the first phase of its ambitious $1 million renovation, reviving its 4,400-square-foot facility for safe community use for the first time in decades.
Launched in March 2025, the upgrades feature a rebuilt dance chamber floor, new doors and windows for improved security and accessibility, ADA-compliant restrooms, a refreshed lobby and office, and critical infrastructure improvements.
These changes lay the groundwork for future programming and a stronger community presence.
The Center, founded in 1958 by Malcolm Erni, remains a vital hub on Buffalo's East Side, home to the Paul Robeson Theatre and celebrated cultural programs like the Kakilambe Dance and Drum Company.
Phase Two, focused on the Paul Robeson Theatre, begins this spring, promising even more enhancements to this celebrated institution.

New York State is directing $7.4 million to boost digital literacy and access, benefitting 13 organizations statewide.
The Buffalo City School District Adult Education Division stands out with a $736,587 grant, intended to expand digital literacy and cybersecurity training for students and local residents.
This investment will also launch a device lending library, introduce a refurbished tech policy, and support in-depth staff development.
These steps are designed to close the digital divide and foster essential skills for success in a tech-driven economy.
Organizations like Literacy West NY, Adirondack Health Institute, and the Syracuse Northeast Community Center are also significant recipients, ensuring this impact reaches every corner of the state.
Additional local momentum is growing as Per Scholas brings tuition-free technology training to Buffalo, promising more residents access to high-quality careers in technology.
